8-Hour Day Route: Guatapé & El Peñol Rock Medellín Elevation (Starting Point): Approx. 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level.
7:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Travel from Medellín to Guatapé (2 hours) The route from Medellín to Guatapé involves winding roads through the Antioquian countryside, generally ascending as you leave the Aburrá Valley and head towards the eastern plateau
(Optional stop on Las Palmas at Zarzal coffee and breakfast).

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Climb El Peñol Rock (La Piedra del Peñol) (1.5 hours)Upon arrival near Guatapé, your first stop should be the majestic El Peñol Rock.
Elevation at the base of El Peñol Rock: Approx. 1,925 meters (6,316 feet) above sea level.
Climb the 740 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding reservoir, islands, and green hills.
Elevation at the top of El Peñol Rock: Approx. 2,135 meters (7,005 feet) above sea level. (The rock itself rises about 200 meters from its base).
Allow time for photos and to simply soak in the incredible scenery at the summit. There are also small shops at the top for refreshments.

10:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Travel from El Peñol to Guatapé town (30 minutes)Take a short ride from the base of El Peñol to the colorful town of Guatapé.
Elevation of Guatapé Town (Main Square): Approx. 1,900 meters (6,234 feet) above sea level.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Explore Guatapé Town & Lunch (2 hours)Stroll through the vibrant streets: Guatapé is famous for its “zocalos” – colorful, intricately decorated bas-reliefs adorning the lower facades of houses, depicting local customs, history, and nature. It’s a truly unique and photogenic town.
Main Square: Visit the main square and the beautiful Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Souvenir Shopping: Browse the many artisan shops for local crafts and souvenirs.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Antioquian lunch at one of the many restaurants around the main square or by the waterfront. You might find fresh trout, a local specialty.
1:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Lakeside Activities (1.5 hours)Head to the Malecón (waterfront promenade) of Guatapé.
Elevation of the Reservoir/Lake Level: The reservoir’s surface is generally around 1,890 – 1,900 meters (6,200 – 6,234 feet) above sea level, fluctuating slightly with water levels.
Boat Tour (Optional): Consider a short boat tour on the Embalse El Peñol-Guatapé. You can see the famous “Pablo Escobar’s former mansion” ruins (La Manuela) and other interesting spots from the water. Many boats offer quick tours.
Relax by the Lake: Enjoy the views, watch the activity on the water, or simply relax by the shore.
2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Coffee Break/Final Exploration (30 minutes)Grab a coffee or another local treat at a cafe in town before heading back.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Travel from Guatapé back to Medellín (2 hours)Begin your journey back to Medellín, generally descending back towards the Aburrá Valley.
Elevation Changes: You’ll experience a gradual ascent from Medellín to the Guatapé area. While the maximum elevation reached (top of El Peñol) is around 2,135 meters, this is generally not high enough to cause significant altitude sickness for most people, especially since you’ll be acclimated to Medellín’s elevation. However, the climb up El Peñol Rock can be physically demanding.
Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, especially if you climb El Peñol, which is a significant vertical gain.
Sun Protection: Antioquia can be sunny, and at these elevations, the sun’s rays can be stronger. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
Hydration: Carry water, especially for the climb.
Cash: While many places accept cards, it’s good to have some Colombian Pesos (COP) for small purchases.
Weekends vs. Weekdays: Guatapé can get very crowded on weekends and public holidays, so if you prefer a quieter experience, visit on a weekday.
