3-Day Expedition: Medellin to Urrao (Off-Road) & Jardín

Colombia Adventure Moto Tours invites you on an unforgettable 3-day off-road and scenic road motorcycle journey, weaving through the breathtaking landscapes of Antioquia. This itinerary blends thrilling riding with authentic cultural encounters and immersive natural beauty.

Day 1: Medellin to Urrao – The High Mountain Challenge

  • Morning (7:30 AM – 8:30 AM): Your adventure begins at the Colombia Adventure Moto Tours HQ in Medellin (1,495 m elevation). After a comprehensive bike briefing and equipment check, we’ll hit the road, quickly transitioning from city streets to the rugged off-road trails heading southwest.
  • Late Morning (8:30 AM – 1:00 PM): The initial off-road sections will be a mix of challenging gravel, dirt, and rocky paths, gradually becoming more technical as we ascend.
    • Key Point: Climbing towards the Divide (approx. 2,200−2,800 m elevation): As we gain altitude, the bustling cityscape of Medellin will give way to stunning panoramic views of the verdant Aburrá Valley. The climate will transform from Medellin’s mild, spring-like weather (average July temperatures around 22∘C or 72∘F) to a cooler, more humid mountain climate. Expect misty conditions, especially in the higher cloud forest sections. The vegetation will shift dramatically, from cultivated lands to dense, lush cloud forest characterized by towering ferns, moss-covered trees, bromeliads, and vibrant orchids clinging to branches. This is prime habitat for diverse birdlife, including the iridescent Andean Emerald hummingbird, the melodious Rufous-collared Sparrow, and potentially larger species like Andean Guans.
    • Mid-Route Views: The route will wind through small, remote farming communities, offering intimate glimpses into traditional Colombian rural life. We’ll navigate winding dirt tracks, which can be muddy, adding an exciting challenge. Expect awe-inspiring vistas of rolling green hills, deep valleys, and distant mountain ranges stretching to the horizon.
  • Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Enjoy a hearty, traditional Colombian lunch at a rustic local eatery in a small mountain town along our path.
  • Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Continue the thrilling off-road journey towards Urrao. The terrain will remain varied, with sections demanding focus as we tackle rocky climbs and descents.
    • Key Point: Approaching Urrao (1,830 m elevation): As we descend into the valley surrounding Urrao, the landscape will open up into broader agricultural areas, primarily cattle pastures and some coffee plantations. The vegetation becomes a mix of cultivated land and remnants of humid montane forest. The climate in Urrao during July is typically pleasantly warm, humid but cool, with average temperatures ranging from 17∘C to 24∘C (63∘F to 75∘F), though there’s a very high chance of rain. Bird activity is generally high here, with opportunities to spot various Tanagers and the distinctive Yellow-headed Caracara soaring overhead.
  • Evening: Arrive in Urrao. Check into cozy Anzalik Hotel Boutique. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and relax after a truly exhilarating day of off-road riding.

Day 2: Urrao to Jardín – Coffee, Color, and Paved Comfort

  • Morning (8:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Enjoy breakfast at the hotel in Urrao, preparing for a scenic day on paved roads.
  • Late Morning (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM): Depart Urrao on the main, paved road towards Jardín. While paved, this route is known for its winding nature and incredible scenery.
    • Key Point: Andes Mountains Route: The road will initially climb out of Urrao, offering expansive views back over the valley. We’ll then trace the contours of the dramatic Andean mountains, passing through numerous small towns and verdant landscapes. The vegetation is predominantly lush, with a mix of coffee plantations, banana crops, and remnants of tropical and sub-Andean forest. The climate will vary with elevation but generally remain mild to warm.
    • Birdlife & Views: Keep your eyes peeled for Andean Motmots perched conspicuously, and various Finches and Sparrows in the roadside vegetation. The views will be consistently stunning, featuring terraced hillsides, deep river valleys, and cascading waterfalls, often shrouded in a light morning mist.
  • Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Enjoy a delightful lunch at a scenic spot or a charming local restaurant in one of the picturesque towns we pass through, such as Andes.
  • Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Continue the captivating ride, with the scenery becoming increasingly iconic as we approach Jardín.
    • Key Point: Arrival in Jardín (1,750−1,773 m elevation): As we near Jardín, the majestic mountains will feel closer and more dramatic. The vegetation is distinctly that of the high-altitude coffee region, with meticulously maintained coffee fincas clinging to steep hillsides, interspersed with dense patches of forest. The climate in Jardín during July is characterized by an average temperature of 19∘C (67∘F), with highs up to 27∘C (81∘F) and lows around 13∘C (55∘F). It’s typically humid, with a high chance of rain over 28 days in July, but also significant sunshine (9.5 hours daily). The vibrant town of Jardín, with its colorful colonial houses and stunning basilica, will emerge nestled in the valley. Look for the iconic Andean Cock-of-the-Rock near their lek sites (if the timing is right), Collared Aracaris, and a dazzling array of Hummingbirds flitting among the flowering plants.
  • Evening: Arrive in Jardín and check into the enchanting Villa Juliana Cabañas. These charming cabanas offer a tranquil and private retreat amidst beautiful gardens, often with mountain views. They feature private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and offer a serene atmosphere perfect for unwinding. Enjoy dinner in Jardín’s lively main square, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Day 3: Jardín to Medellin – The Return Journey

  • Morning (8:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Savor a relaxed breakfast in the town, taking in the peaceful surroundings and crisp mountain air.
  • Late Morning (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM): We’ll begin our return journey to Medellin, primarily using the main paved roads for a smooth and efficient ride.
    • Key Point: Antioquian Countryside: The route will offer continued spectacular views of the Antioquian countryside, with its undulating hills, charming small towns, and expansive agricultural lands. The vegetation will slowly transition from high-altitude coffee landscapes to more mixed agricultural and urban-influenced flora as we approach the city. The climate will gradually warm up to Medellin’s typical milder temperatures.
  • Views & Birds: Enjoy the broad vistas of the western cordillera. You might spot common regional birds such as Great Kiskadees, Tropical Kingbirds, and various Doves in the open areas.
  • Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Lunch will be at a convenient roadside restaurant or a traditional “fonda” offering local specialties.
  • Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Continue the ride, navigating the winding roads that lead us back into the Aburrá Valley.
  • Key Point: Descent into Medellin (1,495 m elevation): As we approach Medellin, the familiar urban sprawl will reappear, offering a stark contrast to the natural beauty we’ve just traversed. The elevation will steadily decrease, and the climate will return to Medellin’s characteristic year-round spring.
  • Evening (5:00 PM – 6:00 PM): Arrive back at Colombia Adventure Moto Tours HQ in Medellin, concluding a memorable 3-day motorcycle adventure that blended the thrill of off-road exploration with the scenic beauty of Antioquia’s main routes.
